  We investigate the dominating-

  , of a graph G. That is the maximum number of color classes that are also dominating when G is colored using

   thus provide some information regarding two questions raised in [1] and [2].

Introduction</title><p>Let G be a graph with vertex set V and edge set E. A subset I of V is independent if no two vertices in I are adjacent. A subset S of V is a dominating set if every vertex in <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x13.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> is adjacent to at least one vertex in S. We define a coloring C of G with k colors to be a partition of V into k independent sets:</p><disp-formula id="scirp.65335-formula232"><graphic  xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x14.png"  xlink:type="simple"/></disp-formula><p>such that</p><disp-formula id="scirp.65335-formula233"><graphic  xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x15.png"  xlink:type="simple"/></disp-formula><p>and <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x16.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> is independent for<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x17.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>. The minimum of k for which such a partition is possible is the chromatic number of G, denoted<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x18.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>. The dominating-c-color number of G is motivated by a two-stage optimization problem. First, we partition the vertex set of G into the minimum number of independent sets; secondly, we maximize the independent sets that are also dominating in G. Clearly, the number of independent sets we use in the first stage will be<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x19.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>, the chromatic number of G. Among all colorings of G using <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x20.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> colors, the maximum number of independent sets that are also dominating is defined to be the dominating- c-color number of G, denoted by<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x20.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x21.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>. Formally, we have</p><disp-formula id="scirp.65335-formula234"><graphic  xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x22.png"  xlink:type="simple"/></disp-formula><p>The dominating-c-color number of G was first introduced in [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.65335-ref2">2</xref>] . More research has been done in this area since then (see for example [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.65335-ref1">1</xref>] [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.65335-ref3">3</xref>] [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.65335-ref4">4</xref>] ). However, the two interesting questions posed in [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.65335-ref1">1</xref>] and [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.65335-ref2">2</xref>] remain unanswered. In this article, we present some more results about the dominating-c-color number of a graph that are relevant to these two questions.</p></sec><sec id="s2"><title>2. Main Results</title><p>The following observation was made in [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.65335-ref2">2</xref>] .</p><p>Theorem 1 For all graph G, <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x23.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula></p><p>The following two questions are posed in [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.65335-ref1">1</xref>] and [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.65335-ref2">2</xref>] .</p><p>Question 1. Characterize the graphs G for which <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x24.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula></p><p>Question 2. Characterize the graphs G for which <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x25.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula></p><p>Neither of the two extreme cases is trivial. It is known that if G has an isolated vertex, then<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x26.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>. However, a graph G with <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x26.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x27.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> can be connected and have arbitrarily large minimum degree.</p><p>Theorem 2. [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.65335-ref1">1</xref>] For every integer <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x28.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> there exists a connected graph G with <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x28.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x29.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> and <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x28.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x29.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x30.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula></p><p>The following lemma may help us understand the relation between the structure of a graph and its dominating-c-color number. It shows that if a graph G contains a complete bipartite graph as a spanning subgraph, then the dominating-c-color number of G is the sum of the dominating-c-color numbers of these two subgraphs.</p><p>Lemma 1. Remarks</title><p>It is well known that there are uniquely k-colorable graphs with arbitrarily large girth. Therefore, there are graphs G such that <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x169.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> and G has arbitrarily large girth. In light of Theorems 5 and 6, we would like to ask the following question.</p><p>Question 3. Are there triangle-free graphs G such that <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/3-1200256x170.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> and does G not contain a uniquely k-colorable graph?
