In this paper, we give an algorithm to find an optimal edge-   coloring of a cactus in polynomial time. In our best knowledge, this is the first polynomial-time algorithm to find an optimal edge-coloring of a cactus.

Introduction</title><p>Let <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x10.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> be a graph with vertex set V and edge set E, and let C be a set of colors. An edge-coloring of G is to color all the edges in E so that any two adjacent edges are colored with different colors in C. The minimum number of colors required for edge-colorings of G is called the chromatic index, and is denoted by<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x11.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>. It is well-known that <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x12.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> for every simple graph G and that <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x13.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> for every bipartite (multi)graph G, where <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x14.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> is the maximum degree of G [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.60497-ref1">1</xref>]. The ordinary edge-coloring problem is to compute the chromatic index <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x15.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> of a given graph G and find an edge-coloring of G using <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x16.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> colors. Let <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x17.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> be a cost function which assigns an integer <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x18.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> to each color<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x19.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>, then the cost</p><p>edge-coloring problem is to find an optimal edge-coloring of G, that is, an edge-coloring f such that <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x20.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula></p><p>is minimum among all edge-colorings of G. The edge-chromatic sum problem, introduced by Giaro and Kubale [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.60497-ref4">4</xref>], is merely the cost edge-coloring problem for the special case where <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x38.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x39.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x40.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> for each integer<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x38.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x39.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x40.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x41.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>.</p><p>The cost edge-coloring problem has a natural application for scheduling [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.60497-ref5">5</xref>]. Consider the scheduling of biprocessor tasks of unit execution time on dedicated machines. An example of such tasks is the file transfer problem in a computer network in which each file engages two corresponding nodes, sender and receiver, simultaneously [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.60497-ref6">6</xref>]. Another example is the biprocessor diagnostic problem in which links execute concurrently the same test for a fault tolerant multiprocessor system [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.60497-ref7">7</xref>]. These problems can be modeled by a graph G in which machines correspond to the vertices and tasks correspond to the edges. An edge-coloring of G cor- responds to a schedule, where the edges colored with color <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x42.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> represent the collection of tasks that are executed in the ith time slot. Suppose that a task executed in the ith time slot takes the cost<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x42.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x43.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>. Then the goal is to find a schedule that minimizes the total cost, and hence this corresponds to the cost edge-coloring problem.</p><p>The cost edge-coloring problem is APX-hard even for bipartite graphs [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.60497-ref8">8</xref>], and hence there is no polynomial- time approximation scheme (PTAS) for the problem unless<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/60497x44.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>. Conclusion</title><p>In this paper, we show that the cost edge-coloring problem for a cactus G can be solved in polynomial time.
