  This paper investigated the dynamics of a dipole of 
  &#177;
  1/2 parallel wedge disclination lines in a confined geometry, based on Landau-de Gennes theory. The behavior of the pair depends on the competition between two kinds of forces: the attractive force between the two defects, aggravating the annihilation process, and the anchoring forces coming from the substrates, inhibiting the annihilation process. There are three states when the system is equilibrium, divided by two critical thicknesses d<sub>c1</sub> and d<sub>c2</sub> (existing when r<sub>0</sub>

Introduction</title><p>Defects are ubiquitous in nature and are important in particle physics, cosmology, and condensed matter physics [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref1">1</xref>] . This is explained by the importance of the role of defects in the course of different processes (phase transitions, plastic deformations, electronic processes, etc.) [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref2">2</xref>] . Defects in liquid crystals (LCs) affect the manifestation of a number of optical, field, hydrodynamic, and other effects [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref2">2</xref>] . They have posed important problems in optoelectric applications [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref3">3</xref>] as well as in fundamental physics. They can trap nanoparticles [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref4">4</xref>] [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref5">5</xref>] , mediate characteristic interaction between colloidal particles [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref5">5</xref>] - [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref7">7</xref>] and provide ordered templates for colloidal microassembly [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref8">8</xref>] - [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref11">11</xref>] . Therefore, location control of topological defects is important for defect-mediated colloidal assembly, and guided polymerization and crystallization in the self-organized nematic order [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref5">5</xref>] .</p><p>Defects in LCs are topological defects [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref2">2</xref>] , also called disclinations [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref12">12</xref>] . They appear spontaneously at the isotropic-nematic transition when the <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x28.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> symmetry of the isotropic phase is broken to the <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x28.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x29.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> symmetry of the nematic phase [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref13">13</xref>] [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref14">14</xref>] . They are moving during the equilibrium process. Therefore, the dynamics of topological defects in the ordering process has attracted the interest of many researchers and has been largely studied theoretically, numerically and experimentally over the last decades [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref13">13</xref>] - [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref26">26</xref>] . Most previous studies have been confined to investigating the annihilation of an isolated defect pair [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref15">15</xref>] - [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref26">26</xref>] . However, in real systems, disclinations are never isolated, but subjected to the anchoring forces coming from the substrates of the cell containing the liquid crystal. As a consequence, in a confined geometry, the substrate anchoring is expected to strongly influence the interactions between defect lines. A similar anchoring effect has been invoked to explain the annihilation dynamics of nematic point defects confined in capillary tubes [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref27">27</xref>] and in hybrid cells [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref13">13</xref>] [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref14">14</xref>] . However, the behavior of defect lines in a confined geometry remains totally unexplored.</p><p>In this paper, based on our previous study of the relaxation dynamics of a dipole of disclination lines with <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x34.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> in a thin hybrid aligned nematic (HAN) cell [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref28">28</xref>] , we continue to study the relaxation dynamics of the dipole in a confined geometry.</p></sec><sec id="s2"><title>2. Theoretical Basis</title><sec id="s2_1"><title>2.1. Basic Equations</title><p>The theoretical argument is based on Landau-de Gennes theory, in which the orientational order is described by a second-rank traceless and symmetric tensor [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref29">29</xref>]</p><disp-formula id="scirp.52632-formula280"><label>, (1)</label><graphic position="anchor" xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x35.png"  xlink:type="simple"/></disp-formula><p>where <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x36.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> and <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x36.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x37.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> are the eigenvectors and the corresponding eigenvalues of<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x36.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x37.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x38.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>. In the isotropic phase, <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x36.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x37.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x38.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x39.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>vanishes. Numerical Methods</title><p>Time evolution of <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x60.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> in the Equation (4) is computed using a two-dimensional finite-difference-iterative- method employed in our previous studies [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref28">28</xref>] [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref33">33</xref>] [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.52632-ref34">34</xref>] . Results and Discussion</title><p>In order to analyze the influence of <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x92.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> on the behavior of the defect pair, the time dependence of the distance <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x92.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x93.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> between the defect pair for different <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x92.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x93.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x94.png" In a confined geometry, the substrate anchoring forces influences the interactions between the defects. The thinner the cell gap, the greater the impact of the anchoring forces. Consequently, <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x117.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x118.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>decreases and the fitting error increases with the decrease of d. Conclusions</title><p>The behavior of the dipole in a confined geometry depends on the competition between two kinds of forces: the attractive force and the anchoring force. The former aggravates the annihilation process, while the latter inhibits it. The system has three equilibrium states, divided by two critical thicknesses <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x194.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> and<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x194.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/11-7502030x195.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>.
