  The Poisson process is a stochastic process that models many real-world phenomena. We present the definition of the Poisson process and discuss some facts as well as some related probability distributions. Finally, we give some new applications of the process.

Introduction</title><p>Poisson process is used to model the occurrences of events and the time points at which the events occur in a given time interval, such as the occurrence of natural disasters and the arrival times of customers at a service center. It is named after the French mathematician Sim&#233;on Poisson (1781-1840). In this paper, we first give the definition of the Poisson process (Section 2). Then we stated some theroems related to the Poisson process (Section 3). Finally, we give some examples and compute the relevant quantities associated with the process (Section 4).</p></sec><sec id="s2"><title>2. What Is Poisson Process?</title><p>A Poisson process with parameter (rate) <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/12-7402423x5.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>is a family of random variables <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/12-7402423x6.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> satisfying the following properties:</p><p>1)<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/12-7402423x7.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>.</p><p>2) <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/12-7402423x8.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>are independent random variables where<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/12-7402423x9.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>.</p><p>3) <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/12-7402423x10.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>for<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/12-7402423x11.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>.</p><p><inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/12-7402423x12.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>can be thought of the number of arrivals up to time t or the number of occurrences up to time t.</p></sec><sec id="s3"><title>3. Some Facts about the Poisson Process</title><p>We give some properties associated with the Poisson process. The proofs can be found in [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.51236-ref1">1</xref>] or [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.51236-ref2">2</xref>] . If we let <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/12-7402423x13.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> be the time of the <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/12-7402423x14.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula> arrival<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/12-7402423x15.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>, and we let<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/12-7402423x16.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>, <inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/12-7402423x17.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>, be the interarrival time<inline-formula><inline-graphic xlink:href="http://html.scirp.org/file/12-7402423x18.png" xlink:type="simple"/></inline-formula>.
