  Lie groups of bi-M
  &amp;#246;bius transformations are known and their actions on non orientable 
  <em>n</em>-dimensional complex manifolds have been studied. In this paper, 
  <em>m</em>-M
  &amp;#246;bius transformations are introduced and similar problems as those related to bi-M
  &amp;#246;bius transformations are tackled. In particular, it is shown that the subgroup generated by every 
  <em>m</em>-M
  &amp;#246;bius transformation is a discrete group. Cyclic subgroups are exhibited. Vector valued 
  <em>m</em>-M
  &amp;#246;bius transformations are also studied.

Introduction</title><p>When investigating Lie groups of M&#246;bius transformations of the Riemann sphere, we were brought in [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.113336-ref1">1</xref>] [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.113336-ref2">2</xref>] and [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.113336-ref3">3</xref>] to the study of some bi-M&#246;bius transformations. These are functions f : ℂ &#175; &#215; ℂ &#175; → ℂ &#175; of the form:</p><p>f ( z 1 , z 2 ) = A z 1 z 2 + a ( 1 − z 1 − z 2 ) a ( z 1 z 2 − z 1 − z 2 ) + A , where a ∈ ℂ \ { 0,1 } and A = a 2 − a + 1</p><p>Proposition 1: The function f ( z 1 , z 2 ) = z 1 ∘ z 2 is a composition law in ℂ &#175; satisfying:</p><p>a) z 1 ∘ z 2 = z 2 ∘ z 1 for every z 1 , z 2 ∈ ℂ &#175;</p><p>b) z ∘ 1 = 1 ∘ z = z for every z ∈ ℂ &#175;</p><p>c) z ∘ ( 1 / z ) = 1 for every z ∈ ℂ &#175;</p><p>d) ( 1 / z 1 ) ∘ ( 1 / z 2 ) = 1 / ( z 1 ∘ z 2 ) for every z 1 , z 2 ∈ ℂ &#175;</p><p>e) z 1 ∘ ( z 2 ∘ z 3 ) = ( z 1 ∘ z 2 ) ∘ z 3 for every z 1 , z 2 , z 3 ∈ ℂ &#175;</p><p>f) z 1 ∘ z 2 = a if and only if z 1 = a or z 2 = a and z 1 ∘ z 2 = 1 / a if and only if z 1 = 1 / a or z 2 = 1 / a .</p><p>It is obvious that this composition law defines a structure of Abelian group on ℂ &#175; whose unit element is 1 and the inverse of any z is 1/z. By removing the elements a and 1/a we get a subgroup G a of this group. Since ℂ &#175; \ { a , 1 / a } is a differentiable manifold on which the group operations are conformal mappings the subgroup G a is a Lie group.</p><p>Theorem 1. For every z ∈ ℂ &#175; \ { a , 1 / a } the group 〈 z 〉 generated by z is a subgroup of G a .</p><p>Proof: Let us denote z ( n + 1 ) = z ∘ z ( n ) , every n ∈ ℤ , where z ( 0 ) = 1 and z ( 1 ) = z and notice that z ∘ z ( 0 ) = z ∘ 1 = z . An easy induction argument shows that for every m , n ∈ ℤ we have z ( m ) ∘ z ( n ) = z ( m + n ) and in particular z ( n ) ∘ z ( − n ) = z ( 0 ) = 1 , which means that indeed 〈 z 〉 is a subgroup of G a . Let us notice that, for z ≠ 1 we have z ( n ) = 1 if and only if n = 0 .</p><p>If z 1 ∈ ℂ &#175; \ { a , 1 / a } then g z 1 ( z 2 ) = f ( z 1 , z 2 ) = ( A z 1 − a ) z 2 − a ( z 1 − 1 ) a ( z 1 − 1 ) z 2 + A − a z 1 is a M&#246;bius transformation in z 2 and if z 2 ∈ ℂ &#175; \ { a , 1 / a } then h z 2 ( z 1 ) = f ( z 1 , z 2 ) = ( A z 2 − a ) z 1 − a ( z 2 − 1 ) a ( z 2 − 1 ) z 1 + A − a z 2 is a M&#246;bius transformation in z 1 . Indeed, ( A z 1 − a ) ( A − a z 1 ) + a 2 ( z 1 − 1 ) 2 = 0 if and only if z 1 = a or z 1 = 1 / a , which has been excluded and similarly ( A z 2 − a ) ( A − a z 2 ) + a 2 ( z 2 − 1 ) 2 = 0 if and only if z 2 = a or z 2 = 1 / a , which again has been excluded. These properties justify the name of bi-M&#246;bius we have given to f ( z 1 , z 2 ) .</p><p>Couples of bi-M&#246;bius transformations generate mappings M : ℂ &#175; 2 → ℂ &#175; 2 of the form M ( z 1 , z 2 ) = ( f 1 ( z 1 , z 2 ) , f 2 ( z 1 , z 2 ) ) , where</p><p>f k ( z 1 , z 2 ) = ω k z 1 z 2 − z 1 − z 2 + 1 z 1 z 2 − z 1 − z 2 + ω k , and ω k = a k + 1 / a k − 1 , k = 1,2 . The Proposition 1, f) shows that such a mapping has a set E of four fixed points, namely</p><p>( a 1 , a 2 ) , ( 1 / a 1 , a 2 ) , ( a 1 , 1 / a 2 ) and ( 1 / a 1 , 1 / a 2 ) . When restricting M to ℂ &#175; 2 \ E its components are bijective mappings in each one of the variables. Indeed, if z 1 ∈ ℂ &#175; \ { a k , 1 / a k } , k = 1,2 , then f k ( z 1 , z 2 ) is a M&#246;bius transformation in z 2 , hence it is a bijective mapping of ℂ &#175; and since f k ( z 1 , a k ) = a k and f k ( z 1 , 1 / a k ) = 1 / a k , it is a bijective mapping of ℂ &#175; \ { a k , 1 / a k } onto itself. Similarly, if z 2 ∈ ℂ &#175; \ { a k , 1 / a k } , k = 1,2 , then f k ( z 1 , z 2 ) is M&#246;bius in z 1 , hence it is a bijective mapping of ℂ &#175; \ { a k , 1 / a k } onto itself. Since f k ( z 1 , z 2 ) = f k ( z 2 , z 1 ) we have M ( z 1 , z 2 ) = M ( z 2 , z 1 ) hence M is not injective. However, by factorizing ℂ &#175; 2 with the two elements group 〈 σ 〉 generated by the symmetry σ ( z 1 , z 2 ) = ( z 2 , z 1 ) , M induces a bijective mapping of M ˜ of ℂ &#175; 2 / 〈 σ 〉 onto ℂ &#175; 2 . Indeed, an easy computation shows that for fixed ω 1 and ω 2 the equations f 1 ( z 1 , z 2 ) = b 1 and f 2 ( z 1 , z 2 ) = b 2 determine uniquily z 1 + z 2 and z 1 z 2 belonging to ℂ &#175; 2 / 〈 σ 〉 . We can call this mapping M&#246;bius transformation of ℂ &#175; 2 / 〈 σ 〉 . This is a new concept. We are expecting M&#246;bius transformations of ℂ &#175; 2 / 〈 σ 〉 to have similar properties with those of M&#246;bius transformations of ℂ &#175; , as well as lot of applications. Any such M&#246;bius transformation depends on two complex parameters: ω 1 and ω 2 . A composition law in the set of these transformations can be defined in the following way. Let:</p><p>w 1 = ( ω 1 z 2 − 1 ) z 1 − z 2 + 1 ( z 2 − 1 ) z 1 − z 2 + ω 1 ,     w 2 = ( ω 2 z 2 − 1 ) z 1 − z 2 + 1 ( z 2 − 1 ) z 1 − z 2 + ω 2 , ζ 1 = ( ω 3 w 2 − 1 ) w 1 − w 2 + 1 ( w 2 − 1 ) w 1 − w 2 + ω 3 ,     ζ 2 = ( ω 4 w 2 − 1 ) w 1 − w 2 + 1 ( w 2 − 1 ) w 1 − w 2 + ω 4</p><p>Let us notice that since ζ 1 is a M&#246;bius transformation in w 1 for every w 2 ∈ ℂ &#175; \ { a 3 , 1 / a 3 } and w 1 is a M&#246;bius transformation in z 1 for every z 2 ∈ ℂ &#175; \ { a 1 , 1 / a 1 } , then ζ 1 is a M&#246;bius transformation in z 1 for every w 2 ∈ ℂ &#175; \ { a 3 , 1 / a 3 } and z 2 ∈ ℂ &#175; \ { a 1 , 1 / a 1 } . Analogously it can be shown that ζ 1 is a M&#246;bius transformation in z 2 and that ζ 2 is a M&#246;bius transformation in z 1 and in z 2 when excluding some points, in other words ( ζ 1 , ζ 2 ) = ( φ 1 ( z 1 , z 2 ) , φ 2 ( z 1 , z 2 ) ) , where φ k ( z 1 , z 2 ) are M&#246;bius transformations in z 1 when some values of z 2 are omitted and they are M&#246;bius transformation in z 2 when some values of z 1 are omitted. Their expressions appear to be more complicated than those of f k ( z 1 , z 2 ) . However, they induce M&#246;bius transformation of ℂ &#175; 2 / 〈 σ 〉 .</p><p>The study of these mappings is worthwhile, yet it exceeds the purpose of this note.</p></sec><sec id="s2"><title>2. Multi-M&#246;bius Transformations</title><p>The properties e) and f) from Proposition 1 show that f ( z 1 , f ( z 2 , z 3 ) ) is a M&#246;bius transformation in each one of the variables as long as the other variables belong to ℂ &#175; \ { a , 1 / a } .</p><p>To simplify the writing, let us denote ω = a + 1 / a − 1 , s 2 ( 2 ) = z 1 z 2 and s 1 ( 2 ) = z 1 + z 2 , s 3 ( 3 ) = z 1 z 2 z 3 , s 2 ( 3 ) = z 1 z 2 + z 1 z 3 + z 2 z 3 , s 1 ( 3 ) = z 1 + z 2 + z 3 , ⋯ , s n ( n ) = z 1 z 2 ⋯ z n , ⋯ , s 1 ( n ) = z 1 + z 2 + ⋯ + z n . When no confusion is possible we can get rid of the upper subscript. It is reasonable to believe that this happens due to the properties a), d) and e) listed above. Indeed, we can prove:</p><p>Theorem 2. If f m ( z 1 , z 2 , ⋯ , z m ) = a 0 s n + a 1 s n − 1 + ⋯ + a m b 0 s n + b 1 s n − 1 + ⋯ + b m , then for every k = 1 , 2 , ⋯ , m we have b k = a m − k .</p><p>The function f m ( z 1 , z 2 , ⋯ , z m ) is a m-M&#246;bius transformation, i.e. for every k = 1 , 2 , ⋯ , m the function f m is a M&#246;bius transformation in z k for any value of the other variables different of a and 1/a.</p><p>Proof: Let us denote σ k = 1 z 1 z 2 ⋯ z k + ⋯ + 1 z m − k + 1 z m − k + 2 ⋯ z m for every k = 1 , 2 , ⋯ , m and suppose that f m − 1 ( z 1 , z 2 , ⋯ , z m − 1 ) = 1 / f m − 1 ( 1 / z 1 , 1 / z 2 , ⋯ , 1 / z m − 1 ) , which is obvious for m = 3 , 4 , 5 . Simplifications may occur, as in the case of f 5 below, yet they do not alter the symmetry of the coefficients.</p><p>On the other hand, if we write</p><p>f m ( z 1 , z 2 , ⋯ , z m ) = f ( f m − 1 ( z 1 , z 2 , ⋯ , z k − 1 , z k + 1 , ⋯ , z m − 1 ) , z k ) ,</p><p>it is obvious that f m is a M&#246;bius transformation in z k as long as the other variables do not take the values a and 1/a.</p><p>We notice that in order to find exactly what the coefficients of s m are for a given m, we need to iteratively compute f j ( z 1 , z 2 , ⋯ , z j ) for all the values of j from 2 to m. The expressions of these coefficients as functions of ω become more and more complicated. Lie Groups of m-M&#246;bius Transformations in ℂ &#175;</title><p>For arbitrary z, z k ∈ ℂ &#175; \ { a , 1 / a } , k = 1 , 2 , ⋯ , m , let us denote g z = f 2 ( z , f m ( z 1 , z 2 , ⋯ , z m ) ) , which is a set G m of m-M&#246;bius transformations.</p><p>By Proposition 1 (see also [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.113336-ref3">3</xref>] ), ℂ &#175; \ { a , 1 / a } endowed with the composition law z ∘ w = f 2 ( z , w ) is an Abelian group with the unit element 1 and for which the inverse element of z is z − 1 . Moreover, an analytic atlas can be defined on ℂ &#175; \ { a , 1 / a } making it a differentiable manifold on which the group operations are conformal mappings and therefore this is a Lie group G a . Basic knowledge about Lie groups can be found in [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.113336-ref4">4</xref>]. A composition law in G m can be defined by g z &#215; g w = g z ∘ w . Then, for every z, z k ∈ ℂ &#175; \ { a , 1 / a } , k = 1 , 2 , ⋯ , m we have g z &#215; g 1 = g z ∘ 1 = g z and g z &#215; g z − 1 = g z ∘ z − 1 = g 1 , hence g 1 is the unit element of this law and the inverse of g z is g z − 1 . Moreover, g z &#215; g w = g w &#215; g z .</p><p>Theorem 3. The set of m-M&#246;bius transformations G m = { g z , z ∈ ℂ &#175; \ { a , 1 / a } } with the composition law g z &#215; g w = g z ∘ w is a Lie group.</p><p>Proof: Indeed, the properties we listed above show that G m is an Abelian group. It is isomorphic with G a under the mapping χ ( z ) = g z since χ ( z ∘ w ) = g z ∘ w = g z &#215; g w and χ ( 1 ) = g 1 . A topology on G m can be defined as the image by χ of the natural topology on ℂ &#175; \ { a , 1 / a } . This makes G m a differentiable manifold on which the composition law g z &#215; g w = g z ∘ w defines a structure of Lie group. Different complex numbers a define different Lie groups of m-M&#246;bius transformations, yet all of these groups are obviously isomorphic, and therefore there is no need to specify the numbers a, or ω when indicating such a group.</p><p>Let ζ ∈ ℂ &#175; \ { a , 1 / a } be arbitrary and for every k ∈ ℤ let us denote ζ ( k + 1 ) = ζ ∘ ζ ( k ) , where ζ ( 0 ) = 1 . It is obvious that for every k , l ∈ ℤ we have ζ ( k ) ∘ ζ ( l ) = ζ ( k + l ) and then g ζ ( k ) &#215; g ζ ( l ) = g ζ ( k + l ) . In particular, g ζ ( k ) &#215; g ζ ( − k ) = g ζ ( 0 ) = g 1 , hence the group 〈 g ζ 〉 generated by g ζ is a subgroup of G m .</p><p>Theorem 4. For every ζ ∈ ℂ &#175; \ { a , 1 / a } the group 〈 g ζ 〉 is a discrete subgroup of G m .</p><p>Proof: Indeed, if ζ = 1 then ζ ( k ) = 1 for every k ∈ ℤ . If ζ ≠ 1 then we have that ζ ( k + 1 ) = ζ ( k ) ∘ ζ ≠ ζ ( k ) . By using the expressions we have found for different f n we can easily check that there are values of z ≠ 1 for which f n ( z , z , ⋯ , z ) = 1 . For example, if n = 3 , z ( 3 ) = f 3 ( z , z , z ) = 1 for every root of the equation ω z 2 + ( ω − 3 ) z + ω = 0 . Also, if n = 4 , then z ( 4 ) = 1 for every root of the equation ( ω + 1 ) z 4 − 4 z 3 + 4 z − ( ω + 1 ) = 0 etc. It is obvious that for such values ζ = z the group 〈 ζ 〉 is a cyclic one and so is the group 〈 g ζ 〉 , hence it is a discrete subgroup of G n .</p><p>If ζ ( k ) ≠ 1 for every k ≠ 0 , then 〈 ζ 〉 is not cyclic and ζ ( k + 1 ) = ζ ( k ) ∘ ζ ≠ ζ for every k ≠ 0 . Moreover, if k ≠ j , then ζ ( k − j ) = ζ ( k ) ∘ ζ ( − j ) ≠ 1 , hence ζ ( k ) ≠ ζ ( j ) . Suppose that there is a subsequence ( ζ ( n k ) ) of distinct elements such that lim n k → ∞ ζ ( n k ) = ζ 0 . Let us split the sequence ( n k ) into two infinite subsequences ( n k 1 ) and ( n k 2 ) where n k 1 + n k 2 = n k . Vector Valued m-M&#246;bius Transformations</title><p>We can extend the concept of m-M&#246;bius transformation to ℂ &#175; n in the following way. For a k ∈ ℂ &#175; \ { 0,1 } , let ω k = a k + 1 / a k − 1 , k = 1 , 2 , ⋯ , n , and let us build the m-M&#246;bius transformations f m , k ( z 1 , z 2 , ⋯ , z m ) as in Section 2 by using ω k instead of ω . The composition law g z ⋅ g w = g z ∘ w induces a structure of Abelian group on Γ Ω having the unit element g 1 and such that the inverse element of g z is g z − 1 .</p><p>Proof: Indeed, g z ⋅ g w = g z ∘ w = g w ∘ z = g w ⋅ g z , for every z , w ∈ Ω , g z ⋅ g 1 = g z ∘ 1 = g z for every z ∈ Ω and g z ⋅ g z − 1 = g z ∘ z − 1 = g 1 for every z ∈ Ω , since the same is true for every g z ( k ) for every k, by Theorem 3, hence g z − 1 = g z − 1 .</p><p>Theorem 6. The mapping c : Ω → Γ Ω defined by c ( z ) = g z endows Γ Ω with a Lie group structure.</p><p>Proof: The set Γ Ω with the image topology induced by c is a differentiable manifold and c is a diffeomorphism. On the other hand, the group operations are conformal mappings and therefore of class C ∞ . It has a set E of 2 m fixed points. Indeed, every point ( z 1 , z 2 , ⋯ , z m ) where z k is either a k or 1 / a k is a fixed point of f .</p><p>The components of f are m-M&#246;bius transformations of ℂ &#175; in every variable z j if the other variables belong to Ω .</p><p>Since, for fixed ω k , every f m , k depends only on the symmetric sums s j , the values of f m , k ( z 1 , z 2 , ⋯ , z m ) remain the same when making a permutation of the variables z 1 , z 2 , ⋯ , z m . Therefore f is not an injective function. Let ℘ m be the group of permutations of z 1 , z 2 , ⋯ , z m and let ℂ &#175; m / ℘ m be the factor space of ℂ &#175; m with respect to this group. The function f induces a bijective mapping f ˜ of ℂ &#175; m / ℘ m onto ℂ &#175; m . We can call it M&#246;bius transformation of ℂ &#175; m / ℘ m . A lot of questions remain to be answered about these transformations.</p></sec><sec id="s5"><title>5. Conclusions</title><p>To emphasize the importance of the topic we dealt with in this paper, let us present a citation from [<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="scirp.113336-ref5">5</xref>]: “Although more than 150 years have passed since August Ferdinand M&#246;bius first studied the transformations that now bear his name, it is fair to say that the rich vein of knowledge which he hereby exposed is still far from being exhausted”.</p><p>The M&#246;bius transformations are a chapter in any book of complex analysis. They have remarkable geometric properties and a lot of applications. The whole theory of automorphic functions is based on these transformations and they have surprising connections with the relativity theory.
