ABSTRACT: In the field of cross-cultural translation, pragmatic presupposition plays a vital role in discourse comprehension and conversational interaction. As a classic piece in Pu Songling’s Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio, The Lo-ch’a Country and the Sea-market contains a wealth of traditional Chinese myths, social systems, and folk culture. Taking Herbert A. Giles’ English translation of The Lo-ch’a Country and the Sea-market as an example, this paper explores its cultural translation strategies from three perspectives: “retention of cultural presuppositions”, “manifestation of cultural presuppositions”, and “transfer of cultural presuppositions”. Through the analysis of specific examples, the application effects of these strategies in cross-cultural contexts are revealed, providing references for the cross-cultural dissemination of Chinese classical literature and promoting cultural exchanges and mutual learning between China and other countries.
