ABSTRACT: The specter of climate change impacting the Lower Mississippi River Valley and disrupting agriculture is an ongoing reality. The impact on rice production is a serious concern. This manuscript discusses the impacts of heat stress on rice production and its ramifications in yield and quality assuredness. The critical high temperature liability is largely associated with heat stress induced spikelet sterility at anthesis; however, rice breeding may support rice yield protection and limit quality degradation. Additionally, we investigated selected economic opportunities and challenges, including agricultural policies and crop insurance. With proper farm production adjustments, technology innovation, and enlightened Federal policy, rice production may flourish.
