ABSTRACT: This article describes the development of an innovative work-based engineering degree that has been validated against the Skills Development Scotland Framework for the Graduate Apprenticeship in Engineering: Design and Manufacture (BEng Honours). The study evaluates the effectiveness of a hybrid delivery model, examining its impact on learner experience, motivation, and progression, while also considering the benefits for employers and the wider Scottish engineering sector. A qualitative evaluation of the competency-based pedagogical framework is undertaken through analysis of anonymised student data and marker feedback. The findings highlight the benefits of the Graduate Apprenticeship in supporting learner development, delivering employer return on investment, and contributing to the sustainability and growth of Scotland’s engineering workforce.
