ABSTRACT: This essay evaluates the content of a Shandong provincial high school EFL curriculum (2017 edition) through the lens of sustainability. It identifies a key strength in the curriculum’s integration of human and environmental themes but highlights two main shortcomings: a disconnect from students’ local, lived contexts and its narrow focus on the environmental dimension of sustainability. To address these issues, the essay proposes changes such as incorporating authentic materials, focusing on local contexts, and adopting interdisciplinary approaches. It also acknowledges potential implementation challenges, including a lack of resources and teacher preparation, and suggests strategies to overcome them.
