  ABSTRACT: The Niger Delta represents one of the most severe yet under-acknowledged environmental and public health crises of the 21st century. Decades of oil extraction have produced widespread ecological devastation, human rights violations, economic marginalization, and escalating health burdens among affected communities in Bayelsa State and surrounding regions. Evidence from major environmental assessments (including the United Nations Environment Programme Ogoniland assessment), peer-reviewed epidemiological studies, and policy analyses reveals large-scale contamination of water, soil, air, and food systems, alongside increased risks of cancer, respiratory illness, reproductive harm, mental health distress, and intergenerational vulnerability. This article is presented as a perspective grounded in evidence synthesis of international environmental assessments, public health literature, and legal and policy analyses. It contends that the crisis in the Niger Delta must be reframed not as a localized environmental problem but as a global environmental health emergency and environmental justice failure with transnational implications. This Perspective calls for urgent international recognition, coordinated remediation financing, legally enforceable corporate responsibility frameworks, and a rights-based, health-centred recovery strategy. Without decisive global and national action, the Niger Delta risks becoming a permanent sacrifice zone, where ecological collapse, preventable disease, and systemic injustice are normalized.
