ABSTRACT: Guinea holds more than 25% of the world’s bauxite reserves and aims to become a leader in local alumina processing. However, this industrial sector generates major environmental impacts: atmospheric emissions, alkaline liquid discharges, and massive production of bauxite residue (red mud). This article presents an analysis of the current environmental monitoring system for alumina refineries in Guinea, identifies the main environmental issues, and proposes recommendations for reducing the environmental footprint of this strategic sector. The results show that, despite the existence of regulatory frameworks, enforcement remains insufficient and environmental risks remain high. Technical, institutional, and socioeconomic measures are proposed to improve the sustainability of the sector.
