ABSTRACT: This research examines the effectiveness of community-based conservation in managing conflicts around the Kahuzi-Biega National Park (KBNP) and Itombwe Nature Reserve (INR) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Data were collected through socio-economic surveys, and the focus was done on groups in twelve villages bordering the two protected areas. The study identifies five main types of conflict and analyzes the local population’s perceptions of benefits and challenges relating to conservation efforts. Proposed conflict resolution strategies are discussed, focusing on community involvement, compensation, and contractual agreements.
