ABSTRACT: The oral mucosa can present with a variety of lesions, including squamous cell carcinoma, immune-mediated diseases, pigmented lesions, and viral infections like herpes. Prevalence varies among populations, with higher rates in smokers, children, and pregnant women. Accurate diagnosis requires a thorough patient assessment, including medical, dental, social history, and a detailed clinical examination (extraoral and intraoral). It is necessary to carefully examine, palpate, document, and classify lesions into primary and secondary types. Imaging, lab tests, and biopsies are examples of adjunctive diagnostic tools that improve diagnostic accuracy. Effective treatment and improved outcomes for patients depend on clinicians’ prompt recognition and management of the condition.
