ABSTRACT: The large-scale cultural documentary “Patriarchs—Eight Great Masters of the Tang and Song Dynasty”, produced by China Central Television (CCTV) in late 2023, exemplifies meticulous craftsmanship, perpetuating China’s rich traditional culture. This work follows in the footsteps of cultural programs such as “China in the Canonical Books” and “National Treasures”, which have gained significant acclaim. In the realm of new mainstream television, “Patriarchs—Eight Great Masters of the Tang and Song Dynasty” stands out as a documentary of substantial cultural depth. It offers a multi-sensory immersive experience through innovative technical methods and unique content design. This program delivers an audio-visual feast by employing novel narrative strategies, including technological advancements in extra-narrative mechanisms, inter-temporal storytelling within intra-narrative mechanisms, and a multifaceted narrative approach.
