ABSTRACT: The allusive idiom is a special linguistic expression in China, which is brief in form but rich in meaning. Due to the cultural differences between Chinese and English, the translation of allusive idioms has always been a concern for many translators. Weicheng (“围城”) is a scholarly novel with Chinese characteristics, which contains a large number of allusive idioms reflecting Chinese traditional culture. The paper selects Weicheng (“围城”) and its English version Fortress Besieged as the source text (ST) and the target text (TT), analyzing the translation methods and exploring the effects of idiom translation from the perspective of domestication and foreignization, with the aim of giving an insight into the translation practice in literary work.
