ABSTRACT: The Victorian political philosophy classic On Liberty (1859) has
been recognized as a masterpiece that influenced an era. The earliest Chinese
translations were published in 1903, 30 years after the pass away of its
writer, John Stuart Mill, and were translated into China by the famous educator
Ma Junwu and the famous thinker Yan Fu in the Late Qing Dynasty. This paper is
a descriptive and interpretative study of these two Chinese translations. Based
on conceptual history and with the corpus tool to investigate the Chinese
translation of the important concept “well-being” in On Liberty. The
analysis of the Chinese translation of the concept “well-being” in On
Liberty is investigated from its origin, evolution, and the establishment
of its final translation establish.
