ABSTRACT: Traditional ethnic chess games are inseparable part of Chinese culture. From the perspective of intangible culture, this paper analyzes the principles and cultural characteristics of Square chess and Jiu chess, and studies their historical origins, playing rules and structures. It also elaborates the value and role of traditional ethnic chess games in this day and age.
