ABSTRACT: This paper reviews the empirical literature based on the Chinese background from 1998 to 2018 to summarize the motivations and consequences of enterprises adopting the ISO14001 standard. Specifically, this paper sorts out and comments on the internal and external driving factors of Chinese enterprises adopting ISO14001 certification and the actual impact of implementing certification on the economy and the environment, and puts forward the inadequacies of existing research and future research directions.
