ABSTRACT: In this paper, we use the cross-sectional data from the China Family Panel Survey (CFPS) in 2014 and use logit model and OLS regression model to analyze the effects of marriage events and marriage consumption on household poverty. The empirical research results of this article once again verify the existence of the phenomenon of “marriage lead to poverty”. Specifically, in contrast to families without a marriage event, if the family has a marriage event, the probability of the family becoming a poor household will increase by 28.7%. The abnormally high marriage consumption is actually the phenomenon of exploitation between families and between generations. The serious marriage burden it brings to the family cannot be ignored. In view of this, we must actively guide people to establish a correct view of marriage and formulate relevant laws and regulations in order to get rid of this bad customs of marriage.
