ABSTRACT: The study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Urinary Tract
Infection among children attending Babban Mutum Science Primary School Shekal,
Bauchi State, Nigeria. The study was carried out between May to July 2014. Among
apparently healthy pupils, a questionnaire was administered to determine the
risk factors from different age groups, sex, and bed wetting history. One
hundred (100) clean-catch urine samples were obtained from the pupils using
standard procedures. Microbial culture on Cystein Lactose Electrolyte Deficient
(CLED) ager and subsequent Biochemical tests revealed that Eschericia coli (E. coli)
with 11 (28.9%) was the most prevalent while Staphylococcus aureus with 2 (5.3%) was the least prevalent of the
samples with significant bacterial growth (≥105 CFU/ml). 38 isolates
were obtained out of which Gram negative bacteria were the most isolated. The in-vitro antibiotic resistance pattern
of the isolates to common antimicrobial agents shows that the isolates are
susceptible to all the antibiotics except Amoxycilline which is shown to be
less effective in showing great sensitivity.
