ABSTRACT: Focused on the definitions of dependency, the author illustrates that there are various views of dependency from the dependency theory of Tesnière to the modern cognitive linguistics. The followers of Tesnière only study dependency from the perspective of the relations between words, but Tesnière is to research the intrinsic nature of languages, so Tesnière’ dependency theory is necessary to be further studied.
