BEYOND THE RACIAL WEALTH GAP
Structural Class Exclusion and the Case for a Social Mobility Revolution in America
This book proposes a fundamental paradigm shift in how we understand American inequality. It argues that the prevailing Total Population narra-tive—focusing primarily on the median wealth gap between Black and White households—is statistically accurate but functionally misleading. For forty years, American social policy has been trapped in a stalemate between two failed paradigms. On one side, the Colonialists (the modern Right) seek a return to a pre-New Deal era, viewing poverty as a moral failing and attempting to dismantle the federal role in social welfare. On the other side, the Guardians (the modern Left) act as protectors of the 1930s status quo, offering consumption-based tweaks to a safety net that was never designed for an asset-based economy (El-liott, 2025).
